Kashmir Tour Guide: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam & Sonamarg

Kashmir's four classic stops each have their own character, and most packages combine them in 5 to 8 days. Here's how to choose.

The four highlights

• Srinagar: a houseboat night on Dal Lake, a shikara ride and the Mughal gardens.
• Gulmarg: the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, and meadows that turn to ski slopes in winter.
• Pahalgam: the Lidder river, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley.
• Sonamarg: Thajiwas Glacier and the start of the road to Zoji La.

How many days do you need?

Best time to visit

April to June for tulips, green meadows and pleasant days; September to October for autumn colours; December to February for snow in Gulmarg. Book Gondola tickets early in peak season.

Tips

• Local union taxis operate at Pahalgam and Sonamarg for the valley points; they are usually extra.
• Carry a light jacket even in summer, and proper winter wear from November.
• Keep a printed ID; there are regular checkpoints.
