Bhutan from India: Permits, Best Time & Our Paro–Thimphu–Punakha Tours
26 September 2026 By Exporio Holidays Travel Desk
Bhutan is one of the easiest international trips for Indian travellers: no visa, short flights or a drive in via Phuentsholing, and a culture unlike anywhere else.
Entry for Indian travellers
- No visa is needed; you get an entry permit on arrival.
- Carry a valid passport or voter ID card (children can use a birth certificate or passport).
- Indian travellers pay a daily Sustainable Development Fee that is much lower than for other nationalities. The rate is set by Bhutan's government, so check the current amount when you book; we include it in your quote.
A typical route
- Paro: the Tiger's Nest (Paro Taktsang) hike, Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum.
- Thimphu: Buddha Dordenma, the Memorial Chorten and the weekend market.
- Punakha: Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens, and the riverside Punakha Dzong.
Which package to pick
- 5 days: Bhutan Tour Packages from Mumbai from about ₹25,168.
- 7 days in a group: Bhutan Group Tour Package – 6 Nights / 7 Days from about ₹28,350.
- 7 days private: Bhutan 7 Days 6 Nights – Thimphu, Paro & Punakha.
- 13 days: Bhutan with Trongsa & Bumthang for central Bhutan.
Best time to visit
March to May for rhododendrons and clear trails; September to November for festival season and the best mountain views. Winters are dry and cold; summers bring rain.
Tips
- The Tiger's Nest hike takes 4–6 hours return; do it on your last day in Paro once you're used to the altitude.
- Dress modestly for dzongs and monasteries (covered shoulders and knees).
- Bhutan is largely cashless for tourists in hotels, but carry some ngultrum or Indian rupees for small shops.
